Sorry, Excuse me, it's just an accident, but it is also the best Egg roti

I know it has been a while since I wrote an article about food. Yes, I admit I’ve been a bit busy with other assignments. I also confess that I was a bit lazy too. This self-motivation thing is not that easy.

As you know, I’ve had a joyful ride so far in this life with so many highs and lows, gliding through winding roads. And these rides do come with their fair share of accidents. Now, when I think about it, I’ve had so many in life.

According to my mother, when she delivered me at the Wattala nursing home, my dad wasn’t around to be with her. He was apparently at work and was rushing in to see his newborn baby- me. With his excitement, he probably would’ve been a bit fidgety and anxious, which led him to a head-on collision with a lorry that was not moving. Momma says, when he entered through the doors to see the newborn, he had to be treated for his wounds too.

Accidents continued to be a part of my life. I was in another accident when I was 13 years old. We had a car back then, an old Mitsubishi Gallant, which eventually stopped working after an accident. But during this period, it was in a pretty healthy state. Although we had the car, my dad decided to take us to school with his Honda CM-125 double-cylinder bike. We were considerably late, which was 'normal' in our household. But I had no issue simply because my school was closer to home, and I had no problem getting to school on time. I was chilling in the back seat, singing a Hindi song. We grew up watching Bollywood and Boy bands and Girl bands back in the mid-nineties. That was the only entertainment or option we possessed with the three TV channels. If I remember correctly, the song I was humming was – Roop Thera Mastana - an old Hindi evergreen hit. Well, yes, it is what it is.

So, coming back to the story, I was chilling in the back seat, and my 9-year-old sister sat on the petrol tank in front of Dad. We managed to pass through Wattala town and then headed towards Borella. It was a busy day down baseline road, with the bikes and three-wheelers trying to overtake each other. My dad was quietly speeding at 50km per hour on the left lane, with the intent to be on his track. We were passing a lorry, which was stalling in the fast lane. Then, I saw a three-wheeler attempting to sneak through the gap between our bike and the Lorry, and this three-wheeler dude did well until the canvas on the side hit the handle of the bike. At this point, the element of surprise shook Dada, and he lost control of the bike. And that is all that I got to see. Then I closed my eyes as I flew over the bike and the two people on it. I felt myself crashing on the tar road, rolling over a few times with the momentum I gained. I also felt the helmet coming off my head as I rolled over. Then I took some time to gauge what happened. I was probably unconscious for about 30 seconds, so I had no clue where I was. I was about 25 meters in front of the bike. I stood up, tried to clear the cobwebs, and walked toward the bike. As I went near the bike, I saw my father, blood all over his shirt, and the big guy had fallen on top of my sister, unconscious. She was sandwiched and bloodied with a considerable cut on the eyebrow. I tried to wake them up to check whether they were alive. As soon as my father gained consciousness, he started to panic and was shouting out his mind. The guy who knocked us over offered to help. We quickly got on to his three-wheeler and made our way to the accident ward. When we were on the way to the hospital, we realized that he was being strategic, he opted to help to get away from the site of the accident to tamper with the evidence. And, most importantly, not to get caught. Eventually, the matter was settled, but we remained injured.

Although, we did not suffer from fatal injuries except for my sister, who had to go for minor surgery. She still has a cut on her eyebrow, which was a prominent facial feature during her teens. No one necessarily paid attention to me, including myself, and I still have a spot on my knee that is still partially numb after the impact. The moral of the story, is that wear a helmet whenever you ride a bike. Even if you are a passenger, just wear it, it will save your life.

Six years later, I was using the same bike soon after my advanced-level exams. I used to ride it for Rotaract meetings, Malay club events, school events - you name it, I was going everywhere with it. I had a fantastic time for about three months and in a week, I managed to be in 2 life-threatening accidents. Eventually, Dad's classy bike got condemned, and I never got to ride it again.

Back in the day, accidents were part of our daily routine. The sense of uncertainty and danger made us appreciate life. Most importantly, the little things. By the way, after all the accidents we had, we were only left with the little things.

I have to mention that I do not live on the edge any more than I used to back then. But accidents do happen, and most of them are much more pleasant ones, just like the one when I came across the Hot Hot Roti shop in Galle. Now, ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys of all ages and others, you all know egg roti is a popular snack, and often it is very bland, so we opt for some curry to go with it. Also, egg rotti is freely available everywhere, it is the most under-rated snack, ever.

But folks, Egg roti at Hot Hot Rotti shop is simply the best little hut-of-shop, I found after a long time. The small roadside hut offers a satisfying snack for the nominal price of rupees 150/-. It is just beside the Galle Fort mosque, and you would hardly miss it. These guys garnish the roti with mouth-watering flavors that can blow your mind. Most importantly, you don't need any curry to enjoy your egg roti. It is definitely more than a decent egg roti that you will ever find. I also had the egg rolls but, it is quite mediocre, nothing to say much really, so try to stick to the best – egg roti and stroll around the city of Galle and let me know your thoughts!

Sun burn

I woke up as my alarm went off

I knew it was Sunday

But why did I keep an alarm?

when I just can get more sleep.

Then I realized today is the day to get Sun burned

Today is the day where level of my tolerance is measured

Today is the day that I get to practice what I preach

Today is the day for me to prove that I get the last laugh

Today is the day for me to step out of my comfort zone

Today will be a defining day in my life, that’s for sure!

With thoughts going spiral

I had one thing to do,

I had to face the truth

It is going to be a fierce battle,

A battle between sanity and grit

I was determined to show up for myself

I had to prove that I’m worthy,

That I’m good enough

It’s not a question about right or wrong

It’s not a question about faith or what you believe in

It’s about principles

It’s about doing the right thing

My mind was filling up with thoughts that I couldn’t control

I almost got a sneak peak of Mr Perera’s mind

The struggle was real

There’s only one thing I had to do

I had to make a choice

It’s now or never,

I had nothing to prove

There’s no time to procrastinate

I had to remain calm

To simply get my eight hour sleep.

Sleep Apnea

Oh man, it's that time of the day

Thinking of sleep is making me lose my mind.

Who needs sleep anyway?

Some people can sleep,

while others can't

maybe I'm one of those,

Others,

I thought about it,

probably today is a 'good day'

I'm determined,

I'm hopeful,

I'll get my fair share of shut-eye.

I did my math,

If I sleep now I can get four solid hours.

Perhaps, I should count the sheeps from two hundred, in reverse.

That's what all the expert gurus told me.

They can't be wrong,

They know everything!

Two hundredth sheep went over the hurdle,

One hundred ninety-ninth sheep went over the hurdle,

One hundred ninety-eighth sheep went over the hur-

Wait, now, this is stupid!

Why can't I just fall asleep like a normal person?

Maybe, that is the problem,

I'm not normal

maybe - I'm special,

One hundred ninety-seventh sheep went over the hurdle,

One hundred ninety-sixth sheep went over the hurdle

Maybe, I should have a glass of warm milk,

Or hot camomile tea,

No, let's just give it some more time.

One hundred ninety-fifth sheep went over the hurdle..

one.. hundred.. ninety-fourth.. sheep went over..... the hur--dle

Oh wow, this seems to be working!

That's it! finally, some sleep

Let's go!

one hundred.. ninety-fourth..sleep went to the super..market-

buzz buzz buzz

buzz, what the f- buzz

What's going on!!

oh no! No no!

It's time to wake up!

I Got Hacked!

I have great friends. I love them simply because they are better than me. And I try to keep in touch with most of them using social media. Most of my social media accounts were created almost during the time when they were accessible to the public. I used my old Yahoo email account to create them and forgot all about it. I realized that my Yahoo mail account was hacked couple of years ago and I couldn't access it simply because it is hackers' friendly. I can't remember the last time I accessed that account and it had some sort of sentimental value because it is the first account I created, probably in 2001.

Then today, 11th of March 2023, I was caught off guard by an Instagram message, which I assumed, was sent by my life-long friend from school. So the guy pretending to be my friend asked me to send a message that would be sent to me from Facebook to retrieve his account. Well now you know where this story is going right? Yes well, when I responded to this imposter, my Instagram account was immediately hacked. I was actually worried that this knucklehead would use my profile to get through to my friends and some how steal from them. I was heartbroken because I use my Instagram as a digital album to remember moments and this mother-lover managed to take that away from me. Thevuni and I did whatever we could to retrieve my account. Actually since she was the very objective one at that time, she managed to find a solution. And I'm going to share some of the options you have if this happens to you,

  1. Understand the situation - Usually when you are hacked, the hacker would change email and the password or if you have an old email like I did, then you realize that you can't access your own email. In this scenario against all odds - you should know that you can still find a way get your account back. Simply understand your situation and trust that you can get it back.
  2. Instagram will help you - Use the Instagram log in interface to type your user name and try to get a security code if either your email or phone number is still available. If that doesn't work, then you can go to Get Support option. This option allow you to submit a working email address and then a selfie-video to identify or recognize your face with the recent pictures you've posted on Instagram (I sincerely hope you have your own pictures on your Instagram account!). Then you'll receive a email message from Instagram stating that they received the video and will help you soon.
  3. Redemption song - Well Instagram says that they would take few business days but for me those guys helped me in couple of hours sending me a link to change the password and then a security code to log in to the account. These are the steps you need to follow,
  • Select the Reset password link given
  • Enter your new password
  • Select the backup codes link instead of entering a 6-digit code
  • Enter this 8-digit security code to log back in
Well that's about it folks, now that I've found my way back into my Instagram profile, I made sure that the security is tight. I enhanced the security level and made sure that I provided a working email account this time. And after all that drama in the morning, I managed to have a small Burgher nap to settle down, listening to the thunder and white-noise - the best combo to keep away the hackers! well.. may be not!

Food4Thought | Discovering Jaffna's Best Alternative Food Joint in Colombo

I live in the suburbs of Colombo and travelling to Jaffna takes over 6-7 hours. With the existing fuel quota it is not easy to travel freely according to your preference. And opting for public transport can be considered but then it is a serious decision to make, specially for people like me who makes travel arrangements keeping food as the primary objective. I may sound like a great pessimist but what I'm trying to say is that if you are a person living in Colombo - looking out for Jaffna food then go no further than Wellawatta. Yaarl Eat House serves you a variety of Jaffna food ensuring that the authenticity is well preserved.

I usually order pittu, parata, omlette and 'crab curry' - which takes a bit extra time to munch because you start to savor the flavors it gives you. Going for the option for crab curry can make you think twice because you may feel its a bit messy or there are no utensils to break the shells or in my case whether I'd spill curry on my shirt. If there's great food non of these things actually matter, specially when its close by.

They also serve other dishes such as Jaffna cuttlefish curry, Jaffna mutton curry, sprat devilled, rice options, koththu options and string hoppers.

It is not glamorous, maybe its not for everyone but when it comes to food and the authenticity is quite amazing. I always get the feel of Jaffna when get to Yaarl Eat house with the ambience they've created with the set up, background music and most importantly the food they serve on a banana leaf!

Food4Thought | Jaffna Snack Attack!!

Look at his face! He thinks he's so special, I don't like him!

He's so arrogant! Such an ass!

Well.. these are common phrases that we use, when we watch Virat Kohli play a cricket match. This also explains our sentiment towards all Indians for some reason. We as Sri Lankans have a sense of animosity towards Indians specially when watching cricket matches.

But I feel like the few lucky ones who had the opportunity to travel to India few times and meet Indians. This exposure provided the space to create great friendships over the years with Indians. Now, I can safely say that I managed to get rid of my animosity and appreciate the Indians. Because who are we kidding, we are more Indian than we think!

When you analyze the course of history, you may observe that we have been influenced by Indians with technology, fashion, language, culture, education, literature, politics and most importantly food. I can talk about Indian food all day because its that damn good. But today I'm going to stick to 'Murukku', a snack with its origins in Tamil Nadu, which gets its name from the Tamil word for 'twist'. To make this snack, a semi-solid dough primarily made from rice is passed through a murukku-maker and then it is deep-fried.

My friend Sugi told me the inspiring story of Ebiron, the place that sells exceptional murukku you can find in Sri Lanka - the absolute best! He told me that few years ago, an old lady (owner of Ebiron) used to sell homemade murukku and variety of snacks by the main road in Jaffna. The important thing to observe was that she would be sold out within couple of hours every single day. The popularity and quality led to expand her business faster than her competition. Apparently now, she has provided employment opportunities for over 100 individuals and has two shopping malls in the Northern province.

You may attempt to make murukku on your own or if that doesn't work, maybe you might opt to find some brand that is available in the super market but my friends it is nothing compared to what Ebiron has to offer. It is very fresh, easy on the teeth (not hard and chewy), spices used are very well balanced, not oily and most importantly 1/3rd of the cost compared to what is available in the market (500g was bought at Rs. 280/- in December 2022).

Try it and let me know your thoughts!

P.S. Also talk to Sugi he can explain the story better!

Food4Thought | Underrated Queen of the Hills 'Matale'

Matale is a very special place to me. I had the opportunity to work with Thevuni for about a year and a half (during 2017-2018) in different parts of Matale, trying to elevate the capacities of community leaders in 5 chosen locations within the district.

As far as I'm concerned, Matale has a lot to offer in terms of places to visit in comparison to the other two districts in the central province. We did our fair share of taking a hike in the mountains and visiting lakes and water falls, these places were not considered commercial sites therefore, it was in the most natural state.

Well... I'm not going to talk about my work  or the hikes we did but I'm going to talk about the place that made us survive for a year and half to do all these things that I mentioned. This gem of a place is a wonderful discovery as it had so many food options to choose from Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, etc. Most of the time we get to 'Ape Bojun' - starving with the ability to eat the entire buffet but we never even gotten close to it at all, it is good to be ambitious though!

Almost every dish we tried was pretty amazing, specially the Sri Lankan cuisine and the Sri Lankan sweets they had to offer. The sesame products are my favorite!

Most importantly the friendly and polite nature of the staff made us visit this place on a daily basis, just to sustain the relationship and most importantly for the prioritized service.

Last year we both went back to this place after 4 years and the manager still remembered us, he greeted us with a million dollar smile and started his familiar chat.

If you go pass Matale do not miss Ape Bojun! It will be your loss!

Food4Thought | Best Mutton Biriyani in Jaffna

Its true that I drove all the way to Jaffna from Pasikudah just to grab some samosas, but this story is not about that.

On the way to Jaffna I was bummed that the samosas that I was targeting had all disappeared so I had to find an alternative food options to survive one day; and this Gem was found right opposite to Thaj Hotel.

Ordering the Mutton Biriyani was an after-thought but what an after-thought it was! Simply brilliant! It is not too harsh with flavors but enough to blow my mind; and the Mutton portion was reasonable considering the price of mutton these days in the market. The important part is that there were real edible pieces of mutton rather than chewy parts, where I get all frustrated right from the start of the meal. It had a nice Jaffna and South Indian tone to it, which I specially liked. Since it was shared with three people it disappeared in couple of minutes.

Head down to Kabris and order one Mutton Biriyani for yourself because it is not practical to share food that is amazing as this! But be open to share your thoughts!

Leaders are made not born - An analysis

Definition of Leadership

Many experts have defined leadership to possess multiple dimensions over the years, Sorensen (2000) provides an insight into the origin of the term “leader”, having first appeared in English language in the 1300’s, and its meaning was “to travel” or “to show the way”. So inherently, at minimum, leaders must show a new way towards a common goal. Furthermore Mullins, (2002) define it as a relationship through which one person influences the behavior or actions of other people. Thereby considering both concepts leadership can be understood as an action where people influenced and captivated through inspiration or a motivation, to proceed through a shared vision.

Leaders are Born

Understanding the lives of key leaders in the past, by reviewing their behavior and biography is way of analyzing the characteristics of the leader so that the conceptualization can be comprehended. This form of study has been called “Great Man Theory” explained by Richard & Marcic (2003) where the author explains that a person is born with the eligibility that is created to be a leader. For an example Prince Charles is considered a leader because he was born to the British Monarchy, Namal Rajapakse is considered a leader because he’s born to Rajapakse family and for his inherited wealth and political stature. Another scenario is where, a school teacher appointing a class monitor considering the size and height of the student with the assumption of the capacity to be a leader, judging by the appearance.

Later on “Trait Theory” was introduced to understand the concept of leadership where certain natural abilities have created leaders (Blake & Mouton, 1964). Throughout history it is observed that some great leaders emerge over time and there are many evidences that indicate their overall impact to the people around the world. In more recent times, Leaders such as like Mahatma Gandhi, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Martin Luther King can be considered as impactful personalities, where natural abilities such as self-drive, ambition and integrity have been the base to identify them.

Leaders are Made

“You must admit that the genesis of a great man depends on the long series of complex influences which has produced the race in which he appears, and the social state into which that race has slowly grown, before he can remake his society, his society must make him” - Spencer, 1896.

Therefore, by this statement it can be derived that the society or the environment in which the leader has lived or has grown up in, fosters him/her to be a leader, and only then he/she can take all his/her experiences and lead and transform the society for a positive change. Furthermore, Lewin, Lippitt, & White (1939) explains that behavior of people can be transcribed to 3 dimensions; Authoritarian, Participative and Delegative, where leadership is evaluated.

                                   Figure 1.1 – 3 styles model (Lewin, Lippitt, & White, 1939)

This model leads to the argument that each leader who is created by their own society and their behaviors can be transformed into a perfect leader by creating a hybrid of all three dimensions.

Considering the previous model it’s inevitable that leadership is a skill that needs to be practiced and harnessed, which is intertwined with other skills such as effective communication and innovation. This argument further amplifies with the 5 practices for exemplary leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2003);

1. Model the way – Being a role model to the team.
2. Inspire a shared vision – Facilitating a shared vision.
3. Challenge the process – Encouraging new ideas and innovation.
4. Enable others to act – Empowering the team members.
5. Encourage the heart – Recognition and acknowledgement.

Figure 1.2 – The level 5 leadership hierarchy (Collins, 2019)

With the introduction of 5 levels of leadership hierarchy, Collins (2019), explains the simple fact that each person in the world can be considered as a highly capable individual but this individual gradually becomes a competent leader by acquiring skills and capabilities to make progress in the hierarchy with reference to the diagram  shown in figure 1.2.

Personal Reflection and Conclusion

Furthermore, reflecting personal experience of being the National Director of a youth organization named Sri Lanka Unites (SLU) has provided me the experience in working with youth volunteers who were the largest stakeholders in the organization.  Unlike other organizations, where employees are driven for compensation or monetary rewards, volunteers are solely driven by passion for the cause and for the feeling of comradery, therefore, leadership is an integral part of sustaining the volunteer contribution to the organization. Thereby, to be an effective leader, I had to adapt to certain values that would match the team, which required skill development. Considering the 5-level leadership hierarchy (Collins, 2019) I was at level-3 where my skill level was being a competent manager. To gain the trust and to ensure effective leadership at the highest level, I enrolled myself to skills development programs that would strengthen my ability to direct a team towards a collective vision, while enhancing my facilitating skills to be an effective communicator. This transformation I gained through acquiring skills and applying the learning on a daily-basis, enabled me to be a leader for over a network of 200 volunteers around the country. The process led me to acquire attributes such as fearlessness, discipline and confidence coupled with emotional intelligence, ensuring that I had the innate ability to identify needs of the volunteers, while attempting to be an effective leader.

These leadership principles provide an encouraging platform for the team to be motivated and to perform at the highest level. Looking closely at each reference and theories explained by academics and professionals, and connecting them with the personal experience provides an indication that 'leadership' is a skill that I have harnessed over the years through practice and application. Although the statement 'Leaders are born' has its own perspective and relevance in the world, the statement 'Leaders are made, not born' has a greater personal reference and experience that solidifies the argument for me.

Food4Thought | Chicken Cheese Koththu anyone?

I'm a Sri Lankan. A Sri Lankan Malay.

I'm also a Wattala wanker, I'll always be a Wattala wanker where ever I live in the world.

Therefore ladies and gentleman, Iit is my duty to talk about the stuff that makes me proud when it comes to Wattala. Yes it is true - Wattala is known for its diversity of people and the culture. We have Kandy Sinhalese, upcountry Sinhalese, Matara Sinhalese, Anuradhapura Sinhalese, Hill country Tamils, Jaffna Tamils, Indian Tamils, East Tamils, East Moors, South Moors, Kandy Moors, Beruwela Moors, Middle-east Moors, Indonesian Malays, Malaysian Malays, Sri Lankan Malays, Dutch Burghers, Portuguese Burghers, English Burghers and Sri Lankan Burghers - I'm not even kidding, Wattala has them all.

Wattala is also known for its horrible traffic, which I thought, has no leverage to bring out any positivity.

But Today it is all about the food I found in Wattala that we all can enjoy and be proud about. I have to say it is almost impossible to find a decent Chicken Cheese Koththu in Colombo except unless we go to Negombo to find the best Chicken Cheese Koththu in the world - Sameeha (I will feature it soon, when I get there one of these days). Shifana Hotel in Mabole, Wattala also produces one heck of a Chicken Cheese Koththu which is as good as Sameeha. Yes, I said it, maybe because I'm a Wattala Wanker. But if you don't trust me, try it and let me know what you thoughts are. It is definitely the best alternative to the Best Chicken Cheese Koththu in the world.

When I make the order I make sure I request an extra chicken portion because I don't eat alone and I can't be fighting for the chicken midway of the meal. Also, on the other hand in my opinion this particular Chicken Cheese Koththu cannot be eaten alone even if you are ambitious enough to be the President of the country, but of course, it just an opinion, many have proved me wrong including myself.

Food4Thought | Best Samosas in the country

I love to eat

More specifically, I love to eat good food.

So I thought maybe I should share my experience for others to do the same for the simplest reason - why should anyone eat crappy food?

Firstly I have to say, I’m no food expert nor a food reviewer (I’m not too sure whether I got that title right). But I just find good food and eat it.

This is my favorite place to find samosas in Sri Lanka - Hotel Thaj in Jaffna. If you are ever in Jaffna you can’t/ shouldn’t miss this place (it’s easily accessible down the A9 road close to the 3rd cross street). Hotel Thaj has been around for some time and whenever I visit Jaffna I make sure that I pay a visit and grab my dosage of samosas. They serve chicken samosas and the taste is incomparable because it’s too good. The best part is that they don’t cheat with the meat. Sometimes, when we go to a restaurant we feel dissatisfied with the quantity of the dish they serve, but I have never felt that way with the Thaj Samosas, it has always been a fulfilling experience. Thaj hotel produces samosas every morning and the evening on a daily basis, so if you want fresh samosas make sure you go between 10.00am-1.00pm and 5.00pm-7.30pm. This amazing creation is served at a reasonable price of Rs.80/- (During my last visit in December 2022).

Don’t sit and ponder - grab your samosas and share your experience so that more people get the taste of good food!

A whisper from a Phantom

With So much hope I carried you home

home of mine, I live alone

I love the darkness echoes around

As you came in, its yet to be found

I cover myself with this hideous face,

but I'm instantly cured by your beauty and grace

Carried you home, with immense hesitation

I had no plan, only innocent persuasion

Fallen Angel of that I'm sure

Am I her destiny? , A carcass has no cure

Her eyes shine concurring the darkness in whole

while her melodious voice remains to sooth my broken soul

Mask I wear to hide myself from her

Simple words I say to connect and confer

With this darkness around, this phantom can only say

My heart is the only thing I can
offer, with no hope I whisper, you to stay...

Big Empty

Back home,

I feel like a stranger

in this familiar place.

Messy,

I try to find a space

to rest my head,

which has a mind of its own these days.

I close my eyes

Faint images started to unreel

I gazed in to the night that time stood still.

1.38am so little time.

Moon at its peak and showering its light

we arrived,

high energy to keep company

mindful social distancing

we barely touched

guilty circumstances prevail

I step in with happy smoke,

I exhale deliberately

Into her lungs

as she collected the molecules of smoke.

She smiled,

eyes never lie they say.

who are they?

I wonder.

as I did it again,

This time I was flying high.

2.12am is it time to go?

we still kept a foot a part.

She only answers questions.

its never the other way around.

the time slowly leaked with desperate songs.

2.42am we are still here,

empty cigarette pack,

empty shot glass

so time to eat some barbeque chicken,

yes that's it!

hush now its a secret code!

2.56am I exhale valiantly

to no avail.

We have to depart

no more time left

We are certainly good at breaking boundaries

and building them right back up.

we still remain.

I have no clue why.

3.08am its a 6 period day, she said.

hurried pleasantries

we bid good night,

strangers back again.

I had no idea what I was looking for,

dazed and confused

I make my return.

Mind is filled,

big empty

under the shocking realization,

that I'm all alone this time.

6.25am - emptiness is deafening.

Reversus est ad mentem

Today I'm excited,

I feel weightless

A man on fire - I glow

I've been away for far too long

To find myself,

To be found,

In the midst of loosing,

Lost,

battered and bruised,

I survived.

Up-beat, steady pace - I walk

remembering the golden days,

Sun was the limit,

seemingly limitless.

The prodigal son returns,

Home,

Where I belong.

No Surprise

I came to this place, which was ever so green,

I was attacked by people around me monstrous to be seen,

with desperation counted my days,

helpless, flabbergasted with cuts and bruised in terrible ways

Then came the light lasted few desperate lives,

escape wasn't an option until my heart was pierced despite the worthless dives.

Am I to stay here, should I leave? left me with a difficult choice,

Or should I proudly fight a hopeless battle with no rejoice.

I learnt my survival as I was crowded with the shadows that went passing me by,

I was gradually digging my own grave as the days went by

God! send me a message from heaven or a clue of some sort

"I shall not quit" I said to myself as I helplessly fought

Finally with God's grace, I got a break to find my way back

The damn silver line was quite visible comforting me like a sweet mint fag

I took a chance to gulp the drink from my last cup of sorrow,

With a wish of hope, freedom, wealth and a sane tomorrow

I've counted by last days to finally arrive here

With a sigh of relief, head held high, I walk without fear,

I hold no regrets, my mind filled with memories and I couldn't ask for more,

"Be gone" I said to myself, without hesitation now here, I go.....

Bow Down

Never I've seen such grace,

Gleaming

with a gentle smiley face.

Contagious,

mystical,

true sense of gloriousness.

I stare,

Drawn to the hungry glares,

Drawn to the sugary dips,

flips,

and smiles.

Definitely a gorgeous sight

undeniable true grace,

Moses!

yes, I'm color blind '

two gleaming pearls!!

green?

Black?

Brown?

Does it matter?

No, I've got very little to offer, your grace

Hands empty,

slips,

Smiles,

Still complete - Graciousness.

Don't go too close

I tell myself,

guaranteed broken heart,

such a lovable soul,

I still stare.

I think,

he's the fool

most definitely, yes

completely,

Doesn't he know?

Much he knows,

About the flower that blossoms,

smile of summer

is a smile for all seasons.

Best things in life - For Free?

Storming breeze,

refreshes my senses

under the soothing sun,

dipped in the cooling sea

Glimpse of the fading sun,

mesmerized,

I realized

Best things in life, are for free

Joyful birthday song,

non-branded cake

childish blow, at the blazing flame,

never gets old,

loved ones

Best things in life, are for free

Stoney pot head,

under the sea of stars

lame fumes of laughter, Too much to take

Breathless,

Food ain't free, but,

it is the invaluable company

Best things in life, are for free

Water splashes,

blinded my eyes

Life is a race,

only with Dyan

Firm grip, Rush never ends

Best things in life,

are for free

Anxiety - the brain freeze

Anxiety is a word that is commonly used and felt during Pandemic. It is true that we are living in this state of transition adapting to all sorts of new realities.

First we had the lockdowns, we thought it was fantastic. It was a perfect time do things that we wouldn't normally do or we thought it was best time to rekindle dormant thoughts that we park in our minds in the past years. People rested well, spent time with their families, working from home was a perfect reality and we were thinking about doing something productive during the time at home. We thought about self improvement, like playing an instrument, reading books, cooking, gardening, exercising, building online friendships and romances etc. We also thought lockdown was something temporary, although COVID was becoming serious in other countries with the death rates piling up, we thought we were special. We were unbreakable, untouchable, blessed and in fact at one point we managed to get rid of the 'monstrous'   Corona from our country. Weren't we the fools to think that we can go back to our normal lives, then all of a sudden, surprise surprise, 'reality' made a dramatic comeback and gave us a reality check. It made us go back to lockdown and start all over, And this time we were forced to do it right.

The only thing that we can be certain during this time, ironically would be 'uncertainty'. Honestly, if you think about it, uncertainty has been always there in our lives. We have adapted well to counter it with our everyday routine and relationships. But now since both these elements have changed drastically, we cannot work well with the cancer 'uncertainty', we foster anxiety. Anxiety feeds into wide range of emotions that can lock you down even without the government stipulations. When we let it be, it manages to gain control over us, it will happily guide us into depression that would eventually bring us to thrive on committing murder upon ourselves. Some have actually stopped thinking about suicide because of the whole cremation or the burial issue. We have come to a stage where people can't even commit suicide if they want to. It is sad but true!

It was all the same to me, anxiety was becoming my new best friend. We had short but an intense relationship. In fact I thought anxiety was favoring me for some reason. It was becoming too attached not letting me go. Those were days of surviving and self learning. I took my time to reflect upon what was happening around me. Most importantly I realized that I become anxious about the things I cannot control.

Interestingly Buddha has stated, 'Most of the Stress and anxiety comes from the way we respond, not the way life is. Adjust your attitude and all that extra stress would be gone'

As a firm believer of faith and as a practitioner, I started to ponder on this. I reflected why it is necessary to take a step back and understand why I am stressing myself out. I attempted change my mindset and realign my responding mechanism. I can safely say anxiety took a hike leaving me a note even before I realized it.

Like every emotion 'anxiety' is simulated in our minds therefore we can only address it through reflection, understanding and taking action from our minds. It is all in our minds!

In conclusion, I'd like to leave this thought,

Indeed, with every hardship there is ease. (Quran 94:6)

It helps us realize that there's light out there, it is matter of finding it.

Super Heroes in the Ordinary World - #4 Iron Lady aka Ninja Tigress

It's not easy to write about someone when you have a lot of information about that person, which you know should be captured but you also know that you have to pick and choose thus making it rather incomplete. Well, sadly this is one of those attempts, as this post might not do justice to the person at all.

Well this post is about, Thevuni aka Ninja Tigress, I met her long time ago - definitely feels a million years ago, when she was just a girl and I was just a boy. Now she's a young woman and I'm still a boy! - (at least that's what I'd like to think of myself).  Anyway the reason I decided to write a post about her is - simply because - She's super awesome. Of course, she's awesome for many reasons, I'd like to capture the top 7 things out of many I know of, as she attains her rightful place at the hall of fame of Super Heroes.

Reason #1 - Being True to Yourself

She's one of the few people I know who actually walks the talk and doesn't want to talk the walks. She always questions integrity and honesty within herself first, more than focusing on shortcomings of others. She believes in inside out approach that would constantly improve yourself as it keeps you in check. She firmly believes that 'world you create around you is a reflection of your own self'.

Reason # 2 - She has a big heart

Thevuni weighs about 45kg or probably less but everyone who knows her, knows that her heart weighs way more than that. Not in a literal sense but in a more emotional sense of course. She will fight with you, argue with you, get mad at you, but will be the first one to forgive and forget and then fight for you. Her ability to absorb people's grief is quite remarkable, sometimes she goes to the extent of destroying her own well-being just to be there for her friends and family.

Reason # 3 - She's a Huge Animal lover

People in this world can be ignorant or can easily be distracted by their own lack of understanding of compassion. But I learnt a lot about compassion by simply observing Thevuni's love towards animals. She often say that 'Animals have bigger hearts than people'. But then she counter argues by her own convictions, by being compassionate towards all humans. I don't know about animals or humans but I can definitely vouch for her.

Reason # 4 - Her Strong sense of Loyalty

She's one of the most loyal people you can find in this screwed up world. I've seen her do crazy things over this few years compromising her studies, her health, her safety and her life to be with the people that mattered to her the most. She traveled all by herself in a night bus for 10 hrs to be at an event in Ampara (East of Sri Lanka) just because she wanted to contribute, to do her job but most importantly to share the grief of her team mates as she knew work that needed to be done was challenging and absurdly hard. Well she didn't stop doing it once but continued to do it several times, almost jeopardizing her exams multiple times.

Reason # 5 - Not afraid to do the right thing

She's a genuine role model for ordinary women and men, as she's proven to the world that ordinary-average people can do exceptional things in life by simply being ordinary. But being ordinary is not easy, you need to learn to do the right thing. Of course right and wrong can be very subjective in the real world, but at least you need to learn to be 'fair in life'. 'Not Equality but equity' - that's her mantra.

Reason # 6 - Simplicity

'It's simple - Be simple. Be grounded, be humble. - that's the Bottom line' she says.

Reason # 7 - Girl power

She's a firm believer on girl power, and she resonates her beliefs through action. Simply put, she's not afraid to be a woman and to challenge all odds. Lets face it, we live in a world dominated by men, ruled by men, controlled by men and there's very little space for women to take lead, or even participate. So it is inspiring to see a young woman challenging the status-quo of the world, even by a small thing. And she does that - and that's it.

In conclusion, I'd like to state again that this post might be incomplete as it doesn't capture everything about Thevuni but it surely gives a damn good reason to be a Super Hero. I'm truly honored and inspired by Thevuni for her well deserved achievements, her loyalty and most importantly for being herself - Iron Lady.

Super Heroes in the Ordinary World - #3 Ultimate Lazman

So finally decided that I had some time to write about something, in this case somebody. Its not just somebody - the one and only Ultimate Lazman. His mother called him Larry and don't be fooled by his colour- he's a 100% Sri Lankan. This guy is quite instrumental in shaping my ideology to be a genuine human being.

Some people are only good at inspiring through words not by action and some are good in coaching people but not being role models. This guy - Lazman - is an all rounder of all rounders, he walks the talk and a great life coach too. His positive vibes are the best vibes you can ask for on a rough day, not forgetting the Baileys. I've never met a person who can only talk about positive things - except Lazman.

We often have deep conversation over a cup of tea or 'milk', almost every time it starts with a simple question - For an example,

Quite recently he asked me - 'So Ramzi How does it feel to be fasting - spiritually?' - There's no simple answer for that question because no one really have asked me that before. Generally people ask 'Are you hungry?' or they would say ' you must be thirsty' or they would simply assume that we cant even swallow saliva!

The first phase of our friendship was based on an introduction made to help him to conduct a mini conference. I met him several times since the introduction and one particular occasion was really stuck in my memory, where once we were having a conversation about the Future leaders conference that concluded in Ampara and I was explaining it to him that it was one of the roughest experiences I ever had in a while and I told him during this rough patch someone managed to steal 30,000 rupees from me. At that moment of time he slowly reached his pocket took a 20,000 rupee note collection and forces into my pocket. My reflexes are very slow so he managed to win. I know Lazman is not a Rich guy but He's definitely Rich at heart, What he told me that day was that 'Ramzi, Universe has a special way of giving back to me when I need money, So it is not a problem - you keep it. You need it more than I do.' I hope one day I could be generous as he is. - I wish.

He's inspiring in many ways, he in fact watched movies for his Masters degree. That, I think super cool thing to do.

His wisdom through experience and coaching can be considered invaluable, Thank God I'm his friend, I get it for free!!
You are a true inspiration LAZMAN, only if you had a drive to run for President, - you will definitely be Mr.President.

Love you to Melbourne and Back. <3 Be awesome as you are.

I'm honoured to be your friend. But, For me, you are family.
